First Shots
Curious About Shooting but Not Sure Where to Start?
On November 14, OnPoint Personal Defense is holding another First Shots class — designed specifically for people who are new to firearms or who simply want a comfortable, structured introduction.
You do not need to own a firearm.
You do not need to buy equipment before coming.
You do not have to shoot in order to take the class.
And you definitely do not need to already know what you are doing.
We can provide hearing protection, eye protection and a firearm for you to use if you choose to shoot.
And before anyone even gets to that point, we can start with the basics.
We had 3D-printed training pistols made so students can learn simple handling concepts without immediately handling a live firearm.
Baby steps.
That means you can get comfortable with things like how a pistol is held, where your hands go, and the basic rules of safe handling before moving any further.
Just come with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
Who Is First Shots For?
First Shots is a great fit for:
Someone who has never fired a gun before
Someone who has been around firearms but has very little experience
Someone who wants to become more comfortable before deciding whether firearm ownership is right for them
Someone who feels nervous or intimidated by traditional range environments
Someone whose spouse or partner owns or carries a firearm
Someone who wants to know how to safely handle a firearm in an emergency
Someone who simply wants basic firearm knowledge without becoming a shooter
Youth who are ready to begin learning safe firearm handling
One group we particularly encourage is people who live with someone who carries a firearm.
You may have no interest in carrying one yourself. You may not even want to shoot.
But if your spouse or partner carries a firearm, there could be an emergency where you need to move it, secure it or otherwise handle it safely.
That is not the moment to be learning what to do.
First Shots gives you an opportunity to become familiar with safe firearm handling in a controlled environment, with an instructor there to guide you.
And again, you do not have to shoot.
Safe knowledge is valuable on its own.
We Start With the Basics
For some people, even picking up a real firearm for the first time can feel intimidating.
That is exactly why we use 3D-printed training pistols as part of the learning process.
They allow us to teach the basics without adding unnecessary pressure.
Students can slow things down, ask questions and get comfortable before deciding whether they want to progress further.
No rushing.
No pressure.
No judgment.
Just one step at a time.
Small Classes for a Reason
We intentionally keep our First Shots classes small.
When someone is learning something completely new — particularly something as important as firearm safety — we believe they deserve individual attention.
A small class allows our instructors to spend time with each student, answer questions and make sure nobody feels rushed or left behind.
This is not about getting as many people through a class as possible.
It is about teaching people well.
No Judgment
One of the things we care deeply about at OnPoint is creating an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions.
There are no silly questions.
If you have never touched a firearm before, that is perfectly fine.
If you are nervous, tell us.
If you need something explained again, ask.
If you don't want to shoot, you don't have to.
If you decide you need a little more time before taking the next step, that is fine too.
There is no judgment.
Our job is to teach you, not impress you.
Youth Are Welcome
We also welcome youth students in our First Shots classes.
We believe responsible firearm education should begin with safety, respect and proper instruction.
If you are considering firearms education for a young person, contact us and we can help determine whether this class is the right starting point.
You Don't Need to Bring Anything Special
One of the most common reasons people put off taking their first class is because they think they need to buy everything first.
You don't.
For First Shots, we can supply:
A firearm
Eye protection
Hearing protection
3D-printed training pistols for learning the basics
You can simply come ready to learn.
November 14 — First Shots
If you have been thinking about learning more about firearms but haven't known where to begin, this is exactly why we offer First Shots.
You don't need experience.
You don't need equipment.
You don't have to shoot.
You don't need to prove anything.
Just come with an open mind.
